Creating Connections to Shining Stars: Virginia's Collaborative Early Childhood Birth through Five Conference, July 16-18, VA Beach

Registration is now open for Creating Connections to Shining Stars: Virginia's Collaborative Early Childhood Birth through Five Conference, on July 22-24, in VA Beach.  Creating Connections to Shining Stars is a collaborative effort between many state agencies and early childhood programs in Virginia. The conference will focus on promoting and supporting the implementation of evidence-based practices in inclusive settings for young children, both with and without disabilities.

Commonwealth Autism Service and Dominion School for Autism Hosting an Autism Journal Review Meeting, April 25, 2013, Richmond

The Learning Institute at Commonwealth Autism Service and The Dominion School for Autism are hosting a journal review meeting on April 25, 2013 in Richmond, VA. They will be discussing a current article in autism treatment. The event is open to anyone interested in learning more about autism research and behavior analysis. Free CEs will be provided for BCBAs and BCaBAS.

Ethical Considerations in Behavior Analysis and Autism Intervention, May 7, 2013, Roanoke

The Learning Institute of Commonwealth Autism Service and the Blue Ridge Autism and Achievement Center (BRAAC) will present "Ethical Considerations in Behavior Analysis and Autism Intervention" on May 7, 2013 in Roanoke, VA.  

Workshop Description:
Ensuring the ethical use of applied behavior analysis is an ongoing concern for many behavior analysts providing clinical services. Behavior analysts are working in a growing number of environments and providing a variety of services and as a result, behavior analysts can face a range of ethical dilemmas. This workshop is designed to help participants apply existing ethical guidelines for behavior analysts effectively as well as expand their knowledge of B.F. Skinner’s philosophy on ethics to help guide current practice. Participants will apply this knowledge to a variety of situations presented in written and/or video vignettes. Emphasis will be placed on ethical concerns while providing clinical services or consultation to individuals with developmental delays or autism spectrum disorder. This workshop is appropriate for both BCBAs and BCaBAs looking to increase their knowledge and understanding of ethical behavior in clinical services.

About The Presenter:
Christine Holland, MS, BCBA, Behavior Learning Institute Coordinator, has worked with individuals with autism and developmental delays for over 12 years. She earned her Bachelor of Science from the University of Massachusetts and her Master’s in Behavior Analysis from the University of North Texas. Christine has provided services to children with autism and their families in a variety of settings including home, school, and community. Christine has been with Commonwealth Autism Service for over 5 years and is currently the coordinator for The Learning Institute.

The Basics of Autism: A Training for Childcare Providers

Workshop Description:
The prevalence of children with autism spectrum disorder continues to increase.
Evidence has indicated that early identification and intervention can significantly
improve outcomes. This session will provide a comprehensive overview of autism for childcare providers. Participants will be introduced to the core deficits of autism, early warning signs, and common screening tools. Participants will also be provided with strategies to discuss concerns with family members.  Evidence based interventions and strategies for successful inclusion in both the public and private childcare environment will be discussed. A Certificate of Attendance will be provided at the conclusion of the workshop.
