Helping students with autism spectrum disorders in general education classrooms manage transition

A discussion about the core characteristics of ASD and the impact these characteristics have on an individual’s ability to transition, especially in the general education setting, is presented. Several strategies are available for educators to use within the classroom with emphasis on the use of visual support systems.  A selected visual support which highlighted throughout the article is that of an activity schedule.  The authors explain the purpose of an activity schedule with literature support.  Finally, the authors explain the twelve steps from developing and implementing a visual schedule to promoting generalization across settings and activities.
