The purpose of the article is to provide a collection of strategies that teachers can apply when the function of a learner’s behavior is determined to be sensory-based. Most behavioral problems are a result of ineffective communication skills, a core deficit in autism, therefore it is essential to recognize sensory needs and assist the learner in reaching the desired outcome through appropriate means. The authors describe the challenges of a sensory based need and the necessity of meeting these needs before learning can take place. Descriptions of Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) and Sensory Modulation Dysfunction (SMP) are provided. Additionally, the three types of sensory-based learners are defined and interventions for use in the classroom are discussed. Learners with autism may fall into anyone of these sensory based categories therefore a holistic, comprehensive educational plan will assist the teacher in providing effective interventions.
